OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson was the lone Democrat to vote against a sweeping measure that includes an extension of unemployment benefits. Six Senate Republicans voted for the measure Wednesday to pass it 62-36. The vote sends the measure into talks with the House. Nelson said Wednesday that he voted against the measure because ``while much of the spending is worthwhile, it adds $100 billion to the deficit at a time we just can't afford to pile up more debt.'' Nelson says cutting the deficit is the right thing to do for the nation's economy and Nebraska taxpayers.
