Lex. Vet's Club & area evacuated

The Lexington Vet's Club and a number of area residents were evacuated Sunday afternoon after a car backed onto a main gas line at 7th and Madison, rupturing it. Lexington Police were called to the scene at 2:12 p.m. Lexington Firefighters also responded to the scene. Acting Police Chief Tracy Wolf says someone backed out of their yard south of the pipe...striking the gas line...and causing a major valve to come off the device. Wolf says the wind was carrying the leaking gas toward the Vet's Club, located a block away, so that building was evacuated and the neighborhood to the north. The car was found on top of the line...so there were some tense moments before the line was capped by SourceGas. A gas company representative was at the scene until 3:48 p.m. No one was injured in the incident.
The male driver of the car left the scene and Lexington police are still looking for him. SourceGas estimated it sustained $2,600 to $3,000 damage from the crash.
