LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Harvey Perlman has announced plans to cut $3.6 million from the budget and eliminate 21 jobs. Perlman announced the cuts Tuesday in an e-mail to staff. These cuts are the first step in trimming $5.2 million from UNL's budget this year. Perlman proposes eliminating the Communications and Information Technology unit at the university's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources and reduce funding to the Office of Research by $2 million. Cutting the IANR unit will eliminate 18 jobs and save $1.4 million. Ten of those jobs were already vacant. The university cuts are needed because the Legislature reduced funding in response to the recession. Perlman told staff he knows the cuts won't be easy.
