Published Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 05:00 AM
Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack has named 36 appointments to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board. The Secretary says the appointees represent a cross section of the beef industry - and expresses confidence they’ll serve beef producers and importers of cattle, beef and beef products well. The appointees’ three-year terms begin immediately.

According to USDA - the Board oversees the collection of checkoff dollars and contracts with established national, non-profit, industry-governed organizations to implement programs of promotion, research, consumer information, industry information, foreign marketing and producer communications.

USDA statistics show an estimated 950-thousand farms with cattle representing approximately 93.7-million head of cattle at the beginning of 2010. The top producing states include Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, California and Oklahoma.
